Wineries: Sonoma Valley

Easy answer: all wineries charge for tastings, nothing's free anymore. You usually get the glass you used or if you buy a bottle of wine the fee ($5 or $10) is deducted. If your friends are on a tight schedule definitely tell them to go to Sonoma as it's right off the highway (Highway 101 North) towards Eureka. From our house in San Rafael (just north of San Francisco) it takes us around 5 hours to get to Eureka.

I would recommend:

1) Seghesio Family Vineyards
The quintessential Sonoma winery experience from one of the area's best-known families. 14730 Grove St., Healdsburg. (707) 433-3579, seghesio.com. This is an easy on/off the highway, and it's in the cute town of Healdsburg, so your friends could get a picnic lunch and eat in the square, then drive a few minutes to the winery.

2) David Coffaro Vineyard & Winery
A very low-key, personable reminder of Dry Creek in more relaxed times. 7485 Dry Creek Road, Geyserville. (707) 433-9715, coffaro.com
We belong to Coffaro's wine futures (we buy wine that's going to be released in the following year) and have been drinking this wine for years. It's less than 10 minutes off Highway 101 and a pretty ride in the countryside. Great wine! Actually, they may not charge for tasting, but I can't find anything on their website.

3) Preston of Dry Creek
Lou Preston's farmhouse-like facility is the cure for when you think all wineries are theme parks. 9282 W. Dry Creek Road, Healdsburg. (707) 433-3372, prestonofdrycreek.com. We went to an event here last year, and it's a nice winery with a farm (olives plus organic vegetables). The wines are better at Coffaro but this is a beautiful winery.

If I had to pick just one winery I'd say go to Seghesio - good wines, pretty winery and not far off the highway.

  1. Jordi, pronunciate.

  2. Bueno, me pronuncio.
